What Is a Box Type Tempering Furnace?
A box type tempering furnace is a rectangular, front-loading industrial furnace used to reheat hardened metal components to a controlled temperature between 150°C and 700°C. The process relieves internal stresses from quenching, reduces brittleness, and achieves the desired balance of hardness and toughness. The box design — with its flat rectangular chamber, front-opening door, and multi-sided heating — provides excellent temperature uniformity and easy loading and unloading of components in batches.
Box type furnaces are the backbone of heat treatment operations in India. They are used not only for tempering but also for hardening, annealing, normalizing, preheating, stress relieving, and aging applications. Their versatility, compact footprint, and relatively low cost make them the first furnace most manufacturers invest in.
SR Thermal Solution manufactures box type furnaces for temperatures ranging from 150°C up to 1100°C depending on the application — covering tempering, hardening, and high-temperature processes in a single furnace platform.
How Does a Box Type Tempering Furnace Work?
Working Principle
The box type furnace consists of a rectangular insulated chamber with electric heating elements mounted on the side walls, back wall, and optionally on the top. Components are loaded through the front door onto a fixed hearth plate or removable loading tray. The furnace is sealed, and the heating elements raise the chamber temperature to the set point. A PID controller maintains temperature within plus or minus 1°C accuracy. After soaking for the required duration, the door is opened and components are removed for air cooling, oil cooling, or further processing.
Key Components of a Box Type Furnace
Outer Shell: Fabricated from mild steel plates with powder-coated finish. Provides structural strength and protects the insulation layer.
Insulation: Multi-layer system — high-density ceramic fibre blanket as primary insulation, backed by insulating brick or calcium silicate board. This keeps skin temperature below 60°C even at maximum operating temperature.
Heating Elements: Kanthal A1 wire or strip for temperatures up to 1100°C. Nichrome 80/20 for temperatures up to 800°C. Elements are mounted on the side walls and back wall using ceramic supports.
Hearth Plate: Heat-resistant alloy plate (IS:3749 Grade 3 or AISI 310) that supports the weight of the charge. Designed to withstand repeated thermal cycling without warping.
Door: Front-opening swing door with counterweight mechanism for easy operation. Sealed with ceramic fibre gasket to prevent heat loss. Optional pneumatic or motorised door for large furnaces.
Control System: Digital PID temperature controller with thermocouple input (Type K for up to 1100°C). Thyristor or SCR heater control for precise power regulation. Optional multi-zone control for improved uniformity.
Safety Features: Over-temperature alarm and cutoff. Thermocouple burnout protection. Door interlock switch. Earth leakage circuit breaker.

Types of Box Type Furnaces We Manufacture
Box Type Tempering Furnace
Temperature range 150°C to 700°C. Designed specifically for post-quench tempering, stress relieving, and aging. Multi-zone heating for uniform temperature distribution. Forced air circulation fan standard on all units above 200 kg capacity. Ideal for tool rooms, job shops, and production tempering.
Box Type Hardening Furnace
Temperature range up to 1100°C. Used for austenitizing before quenching. Available with integrated quench tank and auto-quench manipulator for rapid transfer from furnace to quench media. Heavier insulation and premium heating elements for high-temperature operation.
Box Type Furnace with Drop Bottom Quench
The door opens downward and the hearth plate drops — allowing the entire charge to fall directly into the quench tank below. This minimises the transfer time between furnace and quench, which is critical for achieving proper hardening on certain steel grades. Used for automotive gears, bearings, and fasteners.
Box Type Annealing and Normalizing Furnace
Temperature range 700°C to 950°C. Controlled slow cooling for annealing. Air cooling discharge for normalizing. Used for forgings, castings, and cold-worked components that need grain refinement or softening before machining.
Box Type Preheating Furnace
Temperature range 150°C to 500°C. Used to preheat dies, moulds, and tools before production use. Prevents thermal shock cracking when hot metal contacts a cold die. Also used for preheating weldments before welding to prevent hydrogen-induced cracking.
Applications of Box Type Tempering Furnace
Automotive Industry
Tempering of gears, shafts, connecting rods, crankshafts, and fasteners after hardening. Stress relieving of welded automotive frames and brackets. Preheating of forging dies. SR Thermal Solution supplies box type furnaces to automotive manufacturers across Pune, Chakan, Talegaon, Chennai, and Gurugram.
Tool and Die Industry
Tempering of injection moulds (H13 at 550–620°C, 2x temper), forging dies, press tools, blanking tools (D2 at 200–540°C), extrusion dies, and punches. The box type furnace is the standard equipment in every tool room in India.
Aerospace and Defence
Tempering of landing gear components, turbine fasteners, structural parts, and barrel components per AMS and MIL-STD specifications. AMS 2750 compliant temperature uniformity available on SR Thermal box furnaces.
